It was April 14th, Tamil New year. Mira’s mom woke her and asked her to get ready to send wishes and distribute sweets and savories to their neighbors Kumar family. Mira was too tired.
Mira
said to her mom that she still feel sleepy and doesn’t have the mood to dress
up and go out. And more over Uncle Kumar’s son Thiyash never shares any of his
things with Mira. Mira told her mom, “Thiyash is mean and selfish too. Why do
we need to share him sweets made in our home, Ma”
Mom
replied “Today is new year. I want you to forget all the old arguments and
start to be nice from today or you will get bad luck, remember!”
Mira
wore a beautiful blue lehenga which had golden lotus and pink flowers
embroidered on it. She wore pink
chanbali earrings and was all ready to meet her neighbors.
Mira’s
mom handed her a plate with 3 laddus, 3 murkkus, 3 vada and a small bowl of
kheer.
Mira
walked carrying this plate to her neighbors’ home. She knocked at the door. No
one answered. Again heavily she banged the door, to her surprise the door
opened.
Mira
tumbled and fell down with the plate. The sweets fell down on the floor and the
kheer spilled on the carpet and splattered on the wall. Mira thought “Oh my
God, my bad luck started for sure”.
She
wanted to clean the floor, carpet and the wall before Kumar family sees the
mess.
When
she entered the kitchen to find the broom and dust pan, Mira saw three bowls of
hot steaming sweet corn soup in three different sizes of bowls. One bowl was made
out of glass; another was a stainless steel bowl and lastly a bamboo bowl. The
soup’s smell made her little hungry.
Mira tasted
the soup from the glass bowl. It was too watery. She sampled the soup from
steel bowl it was thick and lumpy. When she tasted the soup from bamboo bowl it
tasted perfect. Mira quickly emptied the bowl.
Now
the soup made her tummy a little full and made her even sleepier. Mira thought
of resting in a chair. When she walked into the living room, she saw three
different chairs. One was a recliner another was an ikea lounger chair and
finally a small wooden rocking chair.
Mira sat on the big recliner chair. It started to vibrate and massage the body. Mira was small for the big chair. The vibration made her dizzy and uncomfortable. She jumped off the chair.
Next
she tried the lounger chair which was little high for her to sit. She sank into
the throw pillows. Mira felt like sitting on a big bun. She got down from it.
Lastly,
she sat on the wooden rocking chair and she felt much more comfortable. She
moved the chair back and forth increasing its moving speed. When she pushed it
hard, she somersaulted and hit the floor backwards. She got up and turned to
see the condition of the chair she was shocked to see the rocking chair broken
into pieces. With an effect of three birds chirping around her head in circle, she
walked towards the bedroom to lie down and rest for few minutes.
In the
bedroom she saw three different sized beds.
She
climbed into the first big king sized bed. It had thick and hard mattress. She
felt uncomfortable to sleep on it. Then she tried the queen sized bed. It had
acupuncture magnets on the mattress which pricked her back. Mira again felt
uncomfortable and got off the bed. She tried the small fluffy medium firm bed.
She felt that she was on the right mattress. Mira was fast asleep.
Kumar’s
family returned home from shopping. “Who dropped these sweets and spilled kheer
on the carpet!!” asked Mrs. Kumar shockingly.
Mr.
Kumar entered the dining and checked, “someone had eaten my soup!!”
“Mine
too” said Mrs. Kumar
“Gosh!
My bowl is empty” said Thiyash Kumar
Kumar
family entered the living room. Mr. Kumar switched off the recliner which was
vibrating. Mrs. Kumar neatly arranged the throw pillows that were on the floor.
Thiyash started crying that his rocking chair was broken. Kumar family was
suspicious and thought it was all a thief’s work.
But
they heard the snoring sound. Kumar family went and checked their
bedroom. The king bed was rumpled, the queen bed's sheet was on the floor and the
pillows were moved.
Thiyash shouted, “Ma... Pa ….Mira is sleeping on my bed”.
Hearing
the scream, Mira woke up and panicked. She ran away to her home without turning back.
Mira
returned to her home. Mom asked “Do you want to eat dosa with sambar? I have
made your favourite ghee roast!”
Mira
stomach was full with sweet corn soup which she drank in Thiyash’s home. She
thought “Poor Thiyash. I drank his soup so he didn’t have any more to drink”
She
told her mom that she is not hungry. Mira went to her room, climbed and sat on
her rocking chair. She rocked back and forth, thinking “Poor Thiyash who didn’t
have a chair to sit because I broke his chair”.
With a
guilty feeling she went and rested on her bed. Again a thought strike her small
mind “I made Thiyash house a big mess. How can I sleep peacefully in my home?
Mira
jumped up and took the dosa and sambar which her mom prepared and ran to
Kumar uncle’s home.
She
gave the food to Little Thiyash and said “I didn’t mean to spill or mess up
your house or even break your rocking chair. I am so sorry”.
Thiyash
replied “That’s okay. I can understand. Now, I and my mom are going to make
some Gulab Jamun. Would you like to help!”
Mira
and Thiyash made many small round flour balls and sweet syrup. Then
they fried the flour balls and immersed it in the sweet syrup. The Gulab Jamun
was ready!
Mira’s
family and Thiyash’s family had the sweetest Jamuns and celebrated the Tamil New Year's day happily.
Moral: We all make mistakes in life. Some little, some big,
some simple, some complex. Some mistakes we regret forever. But you should take
a chance to correct it.
