Mrithika and her Pongal questions

It is second week of January. Mrithi’s mother started to clean the house. Mrithika asked her mom “why suddenly you are cleaning the home, Ma?

Her mother replied “Mrithi, Pongal is nearing, don’t you remember. We should keep our house clean so that we can decorate and celebrate Pongal”

Mrithi’s mother took a stool and climbed on it and started wiping the dusty fan blades of the ceiling fan. Mrithi standing near her asked “Ma, first tell me, what is Pongal?

Her mother answered her “Mrithi, Pongal is a harvest festival. We thank Sun God for the abundance of harvest. Pongal means to boil and overflow. Now can you understand?”

Mrithi “Yes ma, but why do we need to celebrate it?”

“What is the staple food of India? Do you know Mrithi? Mom questioned

Mrithi thought for a while and said “Rice! Rice!”. “Yes, you are right! Farmer’s sows and harvest rice. Tell me some dishes which are made up of rice?”

“Idly, dosa, uthaappam, appam, white pongal, brown sweet pongal.. Ma…the list is big” Mrithi laughed.

Her mother continued “see, how many dishes we make out of rice. We should thank the farmers who are behind the food we eat, this the reason we are celebrating Pongal”

“Pongal is celebrated for four days.

Day 1 is called Bhogi, we discard all the unwanted or old things and we are ready to start the month with new positive beginning.

Day 2, we celebrate Surya Pongal this is main festive day. We draw colorful rangoli, decorate our house with flowers, prepare pongal in colorfully painted earthen pots and eat sugarcane.

Day 3, we celebrate mattu pongal. A day for cow, we paint their horns and give them special food.

Day 4, the last day of celebration, it is Kanum Pongal. We visit the homes of our friends and family and greet them. This is how Pongal is celebrated” Mom finished her answer to Mrithi’s question.

Mrithi said “Ma, what outfit I should wear on the day of Pongal?” Her mother replied “In your wardrobe, check the second rack, take the newly stitched orange pattu pavadai with that green top (traditional South Indian attire), you can wear that on the day of Pongal”.

After getting all the answers for her questions, Mrithi’s teased her mom saying “Ma, then why are you wasting time, come lets clean the house, decorate it and celebrate Pongal”

These four days of harvest festival are celebrated in different names in different regions in India.

  • Pongal in Tamil Nadu

It was April 14 th , Tamil New year. Mira’s mom woke her and asked her to get ready to send wishes and distribute sweets and savories to their neighbors Kumar family. Mira was too tired. Mira said to her mom that she still feel sleepy and doesn’t have the mood to dress up and go out. And more over Uncle Kumar’s son Thiyash never shares any of his things with Mira. Mira told her mom, “Thiyash is mean and selfish too. Why do we need to share him sweets made in our home, Ma” Mom replied “Today is new year. I want you to forget all the old arguments and start to be nice from today or you will get bad luck, remember!” Mira wore a beautiful blue lehenga which had golden lotus and pink flowers embroidered on it.   She wore pink chanbali earrings and was all ready to meet her neighbors. Mira’s mom handed her a plate with 3 laddus, 3 murkkus, 3 vada and a small bowl of kheer. Mira walked carrying this plate to her neighbors’ home. She knocked at the door. No one answered. Goldy, a Friendly Fish

Nagapattnam, a place in Tamil Nadu is a coastal area. Most people do fishing for their survival. Early morning, fishermen get ready with their fishing rod, big wired nets, baskets, and other accessories which are needed for fishing. They also pack some food and drinking water as they don’t know when they will be back to home. In a small village in Nagapattam, there lived a fisherman named Mattu. Mattu was a tall, strong and dark man with short curly hair. He wears colorful dhoti and a white vest with a munda (a piece of cloth) tied as a turban to his head. By 3.00 am, he packed his things and left for fishing in deep sea. That day, the sea was very violent and stormy. Big waves raised up the yatch. His yatch was almost about to drown. He shouted for help, being in the middle of the sea. None could hear him in that strong wind. Mattu’s Yatch drowned. He held a piece of wood from the yatch and was floating. Back in the village, Liloo, Mattu’s daughter was worried that her father

Save every drop of water

It was a bright sunny morning. Golu woke up and stretched his hands with a slow “…yaaaahh….”. He got up from his bed and went to the bathroom to brush his teeth. Without turning off the water tap, he was brushing his teeth for a long time and emptied the whole water tank in his house. When he was about to wash his mouth and brush he found that no water came from the tap. He tapped the tap’s top and turned the value from left to right and right to left. He was confused “I saw the water  coming a minute back, now what happened??” he thought scratching his head. He called his Grandfather “Grandpa! Grandpa! Please come here!” Golu’s grandfather hurriedly came to Golu’s room. He thought Golu  is  in trouble. Golu: “Grandpa, I was brushing my teeth and there is no water coming out of this tap. Is there a mistake with the tap?? Please check Grandpa” Grandfather thoroughly inspected the tap. The tap was perfect. He checked the water line pipes for leakage. It was good and in working
