It was a very hot sunny day. Ginny started crying “Mom, Please buy me ice cream …please mom…please ….” after seeing the Ice cream parlor in the road side.
Mom said “No
Dear, not now! You have a sore throat. If you eat ice cream it will worsen up
and you will get fever. Please understand Ginny! When you become sick you will
lose your appetite and your strength. Now the school have started you cannot
miss your classes.”
Ginny’s brother Pappu’s
eyes gleamed when he saw the ice cream parlor. His mouth started watering and
he thought about the cold containers with different flavors of ice creams.
Vanilla, Strawberry, Butterscotch, Litchi, Chocolate…hmmmm……so many new flavors
are also added in today's Ice cream parlor's menu card like Jack fruit, Bubble gum, Tender coconut,
Fig and the list can go to the next street.
Now, Pappu’s turn to
cry, “Mother, I want ice cream! Buy me one! Pleasee…pleaseee…”
Mom doesn’t
know how to make them understand. She said “Okay, both of them stop crying! All
the uncles, aunties and small children are watching you both crying. So please
stop crying!”
Once Ginny and Pappu
both were calm, mom said “Yes, I can buy you ice creams but on one condition”
Both the kids with happy
smiley stars on their eyes “OOOOHHHH…..Thanks Mom! But what’s that condition?”
Pappu shouted “I know!
I know! We should hold the ice cream but not eat it”. He laughed.
Mom laughed. She said
“No Pappu Dear, you can eat the ice cream but after going home”.
Mom bought the kids
favorite flavors, for Ginny, chocolate and for Pappu, Litchi.
After reaching home,
when they opened the ice cream packs. The ice cream was melting. Mom asked them
to transfer the ice cream from the paper boxes to bowls. They did like the mom
said.
Ginny’s Chocolate ice
cream was completely melted and she said “Mom, now my ice cream looks like
soup! Its ice cream soup! She laughed and started drinking it with a soup
spoon.
But Clever Pappu before
his Litchi ice cream becomes Liquid. He ran to his cupboard, took a jacket and
covered his ice cream bowl. Ginny asked “Brother, what are you doing??”
Pappu said this jacket
will let my ice cream melt quickly as yours. By that time, Ginny finished
off her ice cream soup with great satisfied happiness. Pappu slowly uncovered
the jacket from the ice cream bowl. The ice cream was in the same state it’s
not melted yet.
Ginny surprisingly
asked “The jacket is warm, then why didn’t your ice cream melt, brother??”
Ginny called her mom who was cooking lunch in the kitchen. Ginny asked “Mom! How did Pappu’s ice cream not melt, when he covered it with the jacket even though it is hot??Can you explain
Their mother smiled and replied “Dear Ginny, The ice cream is a cold item and when you cover it with a jacket, the room temperature didn't reach the ice cream. The jacket kept the ice cream cool so didn’t melt”.
Ginny surprised and
said, “Oh …is it? That’s how it worked?? Please tell me more, Mom!”
Mom continued, “The jacket
acts like a cover. After wearing it, neither it allows the heat of our body to
escape nor does it allow the cold air to touch our body. This is the reason why
we wear jackets. Your ice cream melted faster because it was kept in an open
bowl and in the room temperature which is hot now. Pappu’s ice cream didn’t
melt because it was covered in a jacket. Now, can you understand the reason
behind this, my little princess?
Pappu said “Mom, I have
seen Big Ice blocks sellers covering the ice with jute sacks just like I
covered my ice cream with jacket. Am I right mom??”
Mom replied “You are
right, Pappu! Jute is an insulating material. The strands of fiber in the jute
sack prevent the entry of extreme heat touching the ice block and don’t allow
it to melt quickly”.
“I hope now both of you
can understand it very well. I have to continue my cooking or your lunch will
get delayed” Mom said and rushed into the kitchen.
From the kitchen Mom
shouted “So next time if you want your ice creams to be like real ice creams then
cover it with your jackets!” She laughed.
